Rincon Soccer State Champs

Here's a few articles regarding Rincon/University Soccer.

  • Super Soccer Saturday

It was a great day for soccer in the Old Pueblo. Murphey stadium played host to two solid matchups in the state championships.
In the early game, third ranked Cienega and top seed Catalina Foothills faced off in the girls 4a Division 1 finals, the Falcons playing without six starters. The first half saw Cienega goal keeper Justine Haynes-Mermis all over the place leading to a scoreless halftime.
That changed in the second when senior Sara Walker took the kacey Lebby pass and belted one past Haynes-mermis with her left foot in the 68th minute. The goal gave the Falcons the 1-0 lead and in the end that's all they needed as Catalina Foothills won its third straight 4A D-1 title.
The late game saw #4 Rincon and #2 CDO square off in the boys 4a Division 1 championship.
The Dorados took the early lead when Daniel Polanco scored off the Chad Cristia corner kick in the 20th minutes. Then a little over a minute later, Danny toia got the header to go. CDO up 2-0.
Rincon was not to be denied though. In the 37th minute Alex Bacon sent a bullet off the out stretched hands of goal keeper Nolan Rizzo. Less than 20 seconds later Luke Teece tied it up and suddenly it was a new game going into the half tied at 2.
In the second, Teece made good sending the ball to the corner of the CDO goal and that was all the Rangers needed as Rincon upset the second ranked Dorados of Canyon Del Oro, 3-2 the final.
In action outside of Tucson, the 10th seeded Palo Verde girls lost to top seed Flagstaff by one goal, 1-0.
Finally, the second seed Rio Rico boys took down Arcadia 3-1. Congratulations to all of our local teams on a great showing this season.

3-goal rally carries Rincon to 3rd state title since '97
Ben GlicksmanSpecial for The RepublicFeb. 11, 2007 12:00 AM
TUCSON - Tucson Rincon took home its third boys state soccer title since 1997 with a 3-2 victory against Tucson Canyon del Oro on Saturday at the University of Arizona's Murphey Stadium.Canyon del Oro, the No. 2 seed in Class 4A Division I, took a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals in the 20th and 21st minute."They put two quick goals on us," Rincon coach Roxanne Taylor said. "In all honesty, I thought when we were down two goals, that was it." Fourth-seeded Rincon rallied for two goals in the 36th minute to tie the score."The two goals we got back before the end of the first half were huge," Taylor said. The first goal was set up by Colin Anderson, who assisted on all three Rincon scores. Alex Bacon took the pass, and his shot found the back of the net."Alex plays with a lot of emotion and a lot of spirit," Anderson said. "He really helped pick the team up after we went down two goals."Anderson connected with Luke Teece less than minute later to set up Teece's first goal."We were thinking about the first goal, instead of just moving on," Canyon del Oro coach Pedram Mahinpey said. "We got caught and gave up another one."Anderson and Teece connected again in the 63rd minute for the winning goal."(Teece) is amazing at hitting that far-post corner shot," Taylor said."For me the play was just boom-boom," Teece said. "I got the ball at my feet and just tried to put the ball on frame, and fortunately it went in."

  • Tucson Citizen (http://www.tucsoncitizen.com/ss/high_school/41641.php) Rangers get past nemesis CDO to win state title
    By MICHAEL CACCAMISETucson Citizen
It wasn't the situation the Rincon/University High School boys soccer team wanted to be in Saturday.
Within 21 minutes of the start of the Class 4A Division I state championship game, the Rangers trailed 2-0 to Canyon del Oro, a team they had lost to three times this season.
"In all honesty, when we went down two goals, I pretty much thought that was it," Rincon coach Roxanne Taylor said.
    Hold your horses, Rangers fans.
Rincon burst back with two goals in the span of about a minute to tie it before halftime, then controlled the ball after the break, going on to take the state title with a 3-2 win.
"They kind of had our number in three games, but my dad always says, 'He who laughs last, laughs the best,' " Taylor said. "They took us three times, but we took it when it mattered, so who cares that we lost (before)?"
It was the third state title for Taylor at Rincon. She coached the boys team to the 4A title in 1997 and to a 4A co-championship with Scottsdale Chaparral in 1998.
CDO dominated at the start and got on the board in the 19th minute when Daniel Polanco took a cross kick from Chad Cristia and put it in the net.
Two minutes later, CDO freshman Donny Toia headed in another goal.
With her team deflated, Taylor put in junior midfielder Alex Bacon, a player she said "has so much enthusiasm" and "really gets our team pumped up."
Call it the understatement of the day. Bacon took a pass from Colin Anderson and scored from the far right side in the 36th minute. In a show of that enthusiasm, Bacon was yellow-carded for pulling his jersey over his head and running around the field to celebrate the goal.
Anderson then assisted Luke Teece about a minute after Bacon's goal to tie it.
It was Anderson's 18th assist, a school record.
The momentum shifted to Rincon and never went back. The Rangers controlled the ball in the second half, and Teece put in the game-winner in the 63rd minute.
"Honestly, everyone pretty much put their heads down," Teece said of CDO's two early goals. "Then we just caught a lucky break, and the momentum went from there."
CDO was without starting defender Steven Pope-Rowleski after the senior received a red card in the team's semifinal win against Catalina Foothills. Against Rincon, the Dorados lost another senior defender when Derek Wharton received his second yellow card and was ejected in the 52nd minute, leaving the team down a player the rest of the game.
It was still a season to remember for CDO, which finished 22-3 and won the 4A Sonoran Region regular season title. CDO also won the Brandon Bean Kickoff and Sonoran Region tournament title games - both against Rincon.
"After the first (Rincon) goal, I think we were so worried about the fact they got a goal on us that before we knew it, they had another one on us," CDO coach Pedram Mahinpey said. "I think what it really came down to was that they had a little more energy than us.
"It is what it is. I don't think it was a lack of effort from our guys. They played with a lot of heart."

'Amazing' Teece scores two goals as Rincon wins 3rd title since '97

Rincon/University's Luke Teece is so good at corralling waist-high passes, squaring his body and scoring that teammate Colin Anderson insists he can "set him up all day" with volleys.
Saturday, Teece's fancy footwork — call it a "Teece Shot" — won the Rangers a Class 4A-I state championship. The junior tucked a shot into the corner in the 63rd minute to give Rincon/University a 3-2 win over Canyon del Oro at the UA's Murphey Field.
Rincon's third Class 4A title since 1997 may be its last. The school will move up to Class 5A-II next season.
"He's just amazing with that far-post corner shot," Rincon coach Roxanne Taylor said.
Teece, Southern Arizona's second-leading scorer, was more modest. He said calm nerves and a sense of place allowed him to be opportunistic when the ball bounded over Anderson's head on an attempted header.
"I came out, did my best to settle it, stayed as composed as I could and put it in," said Teece, who finished with two goals. "It wasn't too much more than that."
Oh, but it was. Teece's clincher gave the Rangers (19-8) their first lead of the game after trailing 2-0. CDO's Daniel Polanco and Donny Toia scored in the 19th and 21st minutes, giving the Dorados a lead that many — including Taylor — figured would hold.
But a lucky break vaulted the Rangers back into the game. Alex Bacon slipped a goal past CDO's Nolan Rizzo in the 36th minute to make it 2-1. A minute later, Teece took Anderson's pass and put it in for his first goal.
Suddenly surging with life, Rincon stole the momentum from CDO (22-3) in a span of minutes.
"And it's a good thing the team picked up on it. We were falling fast," Teece said.
"We probably had one or two shots on goal before we scored our first goal. Once we got that goal, the momentum completely switched."
Canyon del Oro never recovered. In the 52nd minute, defender Derek Wharton was whistled for his second yellow card of the game and ejected. The Dorados were already playing without senior Stephen Pope-Rolewski, who was ejected from Tuesday's semifinal game after punching an opponent.
Without the two seniors in the lineup, CDO struggled to stay composed.
"It's going to take its toll on you," CDO coach Pedram Mahinpey said.
    "It's mainly a leadership thing."
Rincon's win over CDO was its first in four tries this season. The Dorados defeated the Rangers in the Brandon Bean Kickoff Classic title game in November, region play on Jan. 9 and in the 4A Sonoran Region tournament title game on Jan. 26.
"We had nothing to lose," Taylor said. "We had a feeling that the fourth time was going to be a charm for us."

About Me

I'm Alex Bacon; I attend University High School as a Junior. I've been a military brat my entire life plus 9 months. I have a wonderful family led by my father. He's been in the military for twenty-one years and will be returning to Iraq to serve in the United States Embassy. My mother runs the show at home raising four kids. My older brother [first the worst], Donnie, is twenty-two and lives here in town. [Second the best] Then in 1989 our family was both cursed and blessed with the creation of me. We remained a family of four for 15 years until we had two new additons of Austin and Jessica, now 12 and 10 years old respectively. God led the way to the new family of six. The new entire family has been official for nearly two years now and we're currently residing in Tucson, Arizona.
